IC Information
Character Name: Charlene “Charlie” Bradbury – AKA Carrie Heinlein, though both names are fake. Her true last name is “middleton” – her real first name is not known. (Charlie forms her aliases by taking the first names from Stephen King novels, and the last name of famous sci-fi writers)
Character Canon: [OU] Supernatural
Character Age/Gender: 28 - female
Canon Point: Following Pac-man fever, where she lets her mother go. 
Character Canon History: http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Charlie_Bradbury
Character Personality: At first appearance, Charlie comes across as a fairly normal, cute and geeky girl; perhaps something of a stereotype. She surrounds herself in paraphernalia from her fandom, dances energetically to music when no one was around, and uses words like “frak” on a regular basis. Back in her first appearance, she would act pretty timid when scared, and she admitted a tendency to herself when nervous. All of that is interesting – but barely scratches the person beneath.

Charlie is a liberal – and has been since she was at least twelve, when she stole a video game off a company’s servers and gave it a makeover to express her rather strong views, as she launched her now free game – a first person shooter which pitted them against super soldier vampires in a hospital, as they attempted to save the lives of patients.

Considering Charlie’s father had just died, and her mother was in a coma, that particular action was as likely a matter of lashing out at the world as it was a matter of politics. Still, Charlie apparently inherited some rather strong values from her parents (including but not limited to her love of reading), and she clung to them desperately when her mother passed. Likely it was something for her to cling to, when the makers of that video game she stole had her arrested. On the run, having to falsify everything about herself in order to survive, books comics and role playing games were undoubtedly one of the few consistencies in her life, the common thread tying her false identities to her real one. Them, and the mother who had read her the hobbit as a child and inspired it all, who’s hospital care Charlie has no doubt been paying for since she was twelve, apparently via her hacking skills. If nothing else, Charlie is loyal to those she loves.

She’s brave, as well; despite initial reluctance, she volunteered to head into enemy territory – both to wipe an important hard drive of information, and to hack into Dick Roman’s’s email account in order to find out what the shape shifter was looking for. She panicked, she protested that it was beyond her abilities, but she did it; and in so doing she helped the Winchesters get their hands on information that would help them save the world.

Unfortunately, as her own brave actions showed, she is sometimes more loyal to ideals then people. She said she was doing this, after all, because she wasn’t simply willing to sit back as monsters ate everyone she knew. Yet she was willing to leave them all behind, without so much as a note, after the job was done. It’s the sort of thing she had to get used to, spending sixteen years on the run. Friends were temporary connections she couldn’t afford to reveal too much of herself to.

That brings us to the darker side of Charlie’s personality: the girl who needs control of her environment, who’s confidence in part hinges upon this. This can be seen, for starters, in her work space. Decorated with objects from her fandom, Charlie made it to look as much as possible like her own home, her own environment, rather than the company’s. She downplayed her immediate superior’s importance, and hacked on company property - as if saying that it was her place and she could do what she wanted. While she was in that environment, her voice rang with confidence – joking and teasing with her neighboring co-worker. When pulled out of it, and faced with an authority figure who had actual power over her, that confidence was lost – she became nervous, stuttering and tripping over herself to try and avoid displeasing him. This was shown again when Charlie set to work for the Winchesters, trying to wipe the hard drive. She set up everything herself, minimizing what the boys would have to do, and half panicking when she was faced with the real life threat of Dick. Obviously, she was brave enough to get through it, and do what had to be done. But the confidence she had expressed while in her own territory went out the window.

None of this is to say that Charlie is a control freak, or that the need for control is even a dominant part of her personality – she never tried to tell anyone else how to do their jobs, for example, or screamed that a certain thing had to be a certain way. But it is to say that Charlie’s confidence and determination – insurmountable in her own environment, where she would willingly spend the night in order to crack open a hard drive – is somewhat influenced by her environment. When removed from it, her self-confidence would take a hit.

That undoubtedly contributes to Charlie’s stated issues with authority – her dislike of having control taken from her, and put in someone else’s hands, which leads to trying to downplay the authority figures in her life. She would call her supervisor “teddy bear Pete,” for example, implying that his displeasure couldn’t possibly be a real threat to her. Doing this means she’s in control, not them.

It is also, no doubt, connected to her past. Constantly having to flee, avoiding real attachments in case her past caught up with her, or she was caught out in her present day hacking… Charlie needed to stay in control. She had to be able to leave. She is a girl who has run before, and who knows she may have to run again. It shines through in the way she lives her life and is evidenced even by her choice in idols - Hermione Granger; while a strong female character, and a good choice, she is nevertheless fictional. Yet Charlie put a bobble head of the woman on her desk, spoke to it when working through difficult situations, and drew upon her for strength when going after the hard drive. It was a speech about Hermione that allowed her to continue.

Rather than a human, someone who could surprise her or respond in a way she didn’t like, Charlie chose as her companion a plastic toy of a fictional being. Rather than field work with unknown dangers, she stuck to computer hacking – doing her Robin Hood maneuvers from a place of safety, where she can feel in control.

A lot of that started to shift, though, after the Winchesters entered her life. Having been exposed to the world of supernatural, and forced to flee yet again, Charlie actually found a place where she felt like she belonged. Joining a group of LARPers, Charlie was actually made queen of her fellow players, a position that gave her a great deal of power, control, respect, and admittedly a lot of willing girls – but also gave her a great deal of responsibility. When real magic started cropping up, Charlie wanted to do nothing more than flee the scene. But as the queen of moondoor she refused to leave her people behind. She again stayed, facing down a real life monster and even saving the lovely fairy Gilda. Afterward, she showed her development by saying that she going to stay put this time, and try to honestly set down roots. She found a home, and learned that there are times when you just can’t cut and run. There was too much there for her.

Of course, she’s still scared outside of her element. The stuttering might have gone down some, but her abject terror at being in the field was so great that she nearly became lunch to a pair of fear-devouring djinn. However, without quite meaning to, she also let Dean and Sam into her life. She opened up to Dean about her past and her family, and Dean (and to a lesser extent Sam) opened up to her. Finally having a deep connection to someone out in the world is undoubtedly what has given her the strength to face those terrors and keep going forward, letting go of her past – and her mother, who she had to admit would never awaken. Rather than running from the world of supernatural, or her own past, she’s started doing everything she can to become more a part of her present. Scared she might be, but she’s brave.

AU Information: [If applicable. Focus specifically on what is different from canon and how this changes the character.]
Character Abilities: She’s good with a sword – at least in role play, though she’d arguably be no match in a real fight against a warrior. Thankfully, she’s also a crack shot with a gun (as she reveals in her second and third episodes respectively.)

She’s a hacker. More than that, she’s a genius hacker – The leviathan, who were able to impersonate any person in terms of memory and appearance, claimed that she possessed a special spark that was impossible to copy.

Character Inventory: A gun, a laptop, a backpack, her wallet, a fake fbi badge, and a tablet containing an online encyclopedia of demons and magic that she’d been compiling to better understand the supernatural world.
Samples: [One third person/introspective sample, and one thread of interaction with at least one other character. There will be a test drive meme open before each application round, but bakerstreet, dear_mun, and previous game threads all count if you prefer to use those for your interactive sample, so long as they are threads for the same version of the character you're apping - so, a meme thread with an OU version of a character would not count if you were apping an AU version of a character, but would if you were apping them as OU.

Panic seemed to clutch at her, as she fought to calm down enough that she could actually hear what was being said. Or at least not hyperventilate. She’d been kidnapped; which seemed to happen a lot, but she’s pretty sure this time’s not going to be a grateful blonde fairy looking for a knight. That leaves her with demons that want to eat her, which dumps her right back into panicking mode.

She takes a deep breath, trying to calm herself, and forces herself to listen even when they start talking about needing their energy. She can’t be trapped here – she’s got people who need her back home. She’s the queen. Not to mention Sam and Dean… they will find her here, won’t they? She’s not going to be stuck here. She can’t be.

She took another deep breath, eyes flicking about the room as she took in her fellow captives. All these people milling about, it probably wasn’t another djinn dream. Just as good, probably. Liquefied insides? Not really her tastes. That didn’t really change the fact that she was trapped. It just meant she wasn’t in any immediate danger of being devoured. Hopefully.

Maybe she should flash her fake badge about. See if she couldn’t get any answers from the populace. Or maybe see if her fellow kidnappees knew anything. As soon as she got herself in order. Just because it felt like her heart was going to pop out of her chest didn’t mean she had to show it off.

Deep breath. Eyes closed. She stood, looking around. There had to be some way to get home – to get all of these people home. She just needed to figure out what was going on, first.

[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Charlene “Charlie” Bradbury;
SERIES: Supernatural
CHRONOLOGY: Following her episode – 7x20, the Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo.
CLASS: Hero!

BACKGROUND:
The world of supernatural is fairly similar to our own – the same cities and streets; and, if you go by one fourth-wall breaking episode, duplicates of the same people. The largest difference is that magic is real – and so are the monsters. Werewolves, shifters, demons, angels and ghosts - if you’ve read about them, they’re out there, in some form or another

Countering the monsters - and the demons – are the hunters. Generally normal human beings who stumbled upon the world of the supernatural, often by watching those close to them get killed. Whether through a sense of duty or revenge, they are those who have decided to go out and hunt the supernatural, before it can hunt them. Sometimes they work in groups, sometimes they work in pairs – often they die, but there’s always more willing.

Foremost among these hunters – at least for the purposes of this show – are Sam and DeanWinchesters. Two in what has apparently been a long line of hunters, descended from Cain and Abel. Their entire lives influenced by angels and demons alike – their very birth manipulated by cupid – they were the tools used in an attempt to bring about the Apocalypse. The demons were trying to free their father, Lucifer, and take over the world – the angels were trying to win the war and end the battle for good.

The Winchesters fought both off. Unfortunately, that didn’t end their problems – it was in the aftermath, in the power struggle that followed, that the Leviathans were released. The oldest creation of the world, they had apparently been locked away for fear that they would devour everything.

Upon being freed, they were all too willing to pick up where they had left off. Overtaking people’s forms, and from their shifting their new bodies to whatever form they needed – and often eating the ones they sought to replace – they moved into positions of power. Working under their leader, Dick Roman, they planned to drug the world into domesticity, and treat humans as nothing more than cattle.

Charlie knew none of that. She wasn’t a hunter and she knew nothing of the monsters. She came into the series as a IT expert. A high school dropout, who had apparently changed her identity at least once before, “Charlie” had made herself into one of the most valuable members of Roman Enterprises; in her words, becoming “indispensable” was the only way she could get away with her authority issues.

One of those issues, as it happened, was hacking – on company property no less. In fact, one of the first things we watch her do is make a big donation to a charity in the name of the conservative party. Something Dick found charming, as it happened; although part of his kindness was undoubtedly related to the fact that he needed her.

As mentioned, Dick Roman – head of Roman Enterprises – was actually the leader of the Leviathans, unbeknownst to our hero. It was for his plans that he needed her, specifically to hack into an encrypted stolen hard drive and discover information on the Winchesters. Their fake aliases, their numbers, the place they hid their car – everything that could be used to track them down.

Unfortunately for Sam and Dean, Dick chose Charlie for a reason. Although the drive was heavily encrypted, it took her a mere day to hack inside; where, unfortunately for Dick, she discovered information about Leviathans, and Dick’s identity. Worse for him, she discovered proof to back up the crazy story; namely, the sight of his underling eating her supervisor, and taking their place –their form, and their memories. The only thing protecting Charlie from the same fate was his need for that drive, and her genius talent – according to Dick, a true spark like hers could not be duplicated. As a result, she was able to sneak out and head home, leaving the drive behind with the claim that she hadn’t finished yet. But when she reached her home, she met the Winchesters.

Although she was reluctant at first, protesting that she was just doing her job, the boys successfully recruited her to both wipe the drive, and hack into Dick’s email address – to find out what it was he had been working on digging up, for the last several weeks. The former she did to protect herself, realizing that Dick would never let her live if she saw the drive; the latter she did for them and everyone else, claiming it was only a douchebag who would stand back while everyone they knew was getting eaten.

Charlie succeeded in her mission, despite nearly getting caught out by a security guard - and having to be talked through flirting with him by Dean. Together they discovered that Dick had found what he was looking for, and sent the Leviathan a fake message claiming its delivery would be late. That allowed them to steal the package, and replace it with a borax bomb – borax being the only chemical that could hurt the Leviathans.

Unfortunately, Charlie was waylaid by Dick on the way out, and the delay prevented her from getting completely away before the fake parcel arrived; while the miniature explosion slowed him down, it did little otherwise than annoy Dick, and tip him off that something was wrong.

With help from Bobby, a ghost who had (unbeknownst to Charlie) tagged along, the boys were able to enter the building and save Charlie. Unfortunately Bobby – angry at the Leviathan who had killed him – lost control along the way; he broke Charlie’s arm without even meaning too.

Still, she got away. Although they couldn’t kill Dick, they could certainly run, and take the parcel with them. Charlie packed up her life and disappeared, off to continue her existence elsewhere – in the game, for the sake of capeandcowl.

She told the Winchesters to never contact her again, wishing to go back to her normal life now that her contribution was over.

The boys, meanwhile, managed to get the tablet translated by a prophet; it contained information on the Leviathan – including how to kill one; and using it on their brother, Dick, they were able to end the threat to their world; or at least their threat as an organized team. The world was a safe(r) place, thanks in part to Charlie Bradbury.
PERSONALITY:
At first glance, Charlie appears to simply be a cute – and somewhat geeky – girl; perhaps something of a stereotype as well. She surrounds herself in paraphernalia from her fandom, dances energetically to music when no one is around, and uses words like “frak” on a regular basis. She acts timid when afraid, and she sings to herself when nervous. All of that, however, is just her on the surface.

For starters, Charlie is a liberal – a firm believer in reproductive rights, she attended a function the night before her first episode; she also stole money from the conservative party in order to donate to a charity - showing that, at the very least, she isn’t fond of one party.

She’s also loyal in her own way; if more to her ideals than to individual people. She said she was doing this, after all, because she wasn’t simply willing to sit back as monsters ate everyone she knew. In her words, “What sort of douchebag stands back for that?” But she isn’t the super girl who fights crime; she’s the tech support, preferring the safety of her computer when she thumbs her nose at authority. In fact, she came very close to backing out from fear – and if not for a pep talk from Sam, might just have run.

That brings us to one of the darker sides of Charlie’s personality; the girl who needs control of her environment; who’s confidence in part hinges upon this. Within that environment, her voice rang with confidence – joking and teasing with her neighboring co-worker. When pulled out of it, and faced with an authority figure who had actual power over her, that confidence was lost – she became nervous, stuttering and tripping over herself to try and avoid displeasing him. This was shown again when Charlie set to work for the Winchesters, trying to wipe the hard drive. She set up everything herself – the cameras, the computers – and minimized what the boys would have to do.

None of this is to say that she’s a control freak, or that the need for control is even a dominant part of her personality – she never tried to tell anyone else how to do their jobs, for example, or screamed that a certain thing had to be a certain way. But it is to say that Charlie’s confidence and determination – insurmountable in her own environment, where she would willingly spend the night in order to crack open a hard drive – is reliant upon her environment. Remove her from it and that confidence takes a hit. She stutters, worrying that she can’t do it; babbling nervously. When she sat in front of a computer again, though, she got some of that confidence back, talking about how she could do whatever was needed without issue.

This undoubtedly contributes to Charlie’s stated issues with authority – her dislike of having control taken from her, and put in someone else’s hands, which leads to trying to downplay the authority figures in her life. She would call her supervisor “teddy bear Pete,” for example, implying that his displeasure couldn’t possibly be a real threat to her. Doing this means she’s in control, not them.

It is also, no doubt, connected to her past. We know from the episode that Charlie has disappeared at least time before, and the effects of this are evident. Beyond Charlie’s dislike of authority there is the implication that she has avoided true attachment, either to her setting or the people in it. Following the events of Dick Roman, after all, she was able to pack up her life and disappear overnight – telling the only two humans in the world who knew her full situation never to contact her again. Sensible, of course, considering Dick might try to kill her – but nevertheless saying something about Charlie as a person, and bringing us back to an earlier point. Charlie is more loyal to her ideals than to individual people, and is all too willing to leave those people behind when necessary. She makes sure of it, by controlling how attached she gets in the first place.

This doesn’t mean that she never voyages into the real world, or that she mistakes fiction for reality – she attended a function for reproductive rights prior to the show, and doubted what she read about Leviathans until she saw the evidence. But she is undeniably more comfortable in a world of her own control, with predictable variables – and limited risks.

Put Charlie in a room with a computer, something she sees as her territory, and she won’t give in. Her determination, her pride in what she does and the control she has over it, leads to unwillingness to back down. She spent all night hacking into Frank’s hard drive, refusing to give in. Take that away from her, put her in a situation of danger, and - while she might go through with it – that confidence can start to tremble.

POWER:
Mental interface – Charlie can mentally interface with any electronic (although she must make physical contact with it first.)

Electric shock – Charlie can shock people at will. It can range from a minor electrical jolt, to a powerful blast.

Sword-conjuration – Charlie can conjure a sword to her hand at will – short sword, broad sword, prop sword; regardless, it disappears when she lets go of it. (And in any case, she has no idea how to use them as of now. But it looks intimidating.)

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: How your character will be addressing the game at large. This sample should follow the same rough format as Cape&Cowl proper — a first-person, text/audio/video-based, intentional post to an internet community. Preferably more than a paragraph in length, this sample is to show us your character's unique voice. If you can make us laugh or outright scare the pants off us, you’re doing a good job!

[Charlie’s finger taps lightly against the screen, face pulling into a light frown; she’s spent the last few minutes checking out the old messages – enough to get some idea of what was going on. No Leviathan – porters. Or something.

Another tap to the button, a little too hasty - when the camera turns on, she practically jumps back.]

…Hi. [Crap.] Is anybody there? I mean there’s a camera and a phone and a weird city, so you’d think somebody would be there, right? [She needs to take a breath; relax; she’s in control.]

I’m Charlie; I guess I’ve been kidnapped? Or I guess we’ve all sort of been. Kidnapped; which is just weird. I mean what sort of douchebag does that, but… [Stop talking, Charlie; stop talking.]

I don’t suppose anyone has any leads on how to get out? Not that this isn’t a nice city, but… Not my style.

Though, hey, I guess nothing’s trying to eat me at least…

Second, revised video: So… the Porter’s an AI right? Which means a computer; which means it can be hacked. Right? I mean, come on, anything can be hacked. We just… need to get close enough or something. [Except that brings up the question of who, besides her, can get close enough to do the hacking.]

…Don’t look at me. I am not doing this – I’ve done this; it doesn’t end well. I’m just offering to. I don’t know. Make a program or something. [Yeah; because that’s enough.]

I can’t be the only programmer here, right? Someone has to want to stop her. I mean, this thing is porting off our friends and family here. We can’t just sit around and do nothing.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

Charlie released a long breath of air, blowing a strand of hair from her eyes as she tapped occasionally at her keyboard. The program at the moment left little for her to do but wait. And think.

She didn’t know what she was doing there; she’d been searching for a way out for what seemed like a forever. Or her programs had been, anyhow – looking for anything that might work. So far it had all been rumor and myths, though.

It wasn’t even as if she really wanted to go home. Back to Leviathans, and stinky busses to odd places; friends and family she hadn’t spoken to in years – for their own good. But she wasn’t going to accept that she had to stay here; or that it could take her away at a moment’s notice.

…Maybe she could hack it. It was a computer, right? And computers were her thing. Maybe she could at least manage to control its porting. Or…

It probably wasn’t going to work; she knew that. It was probably going to end up horribly for her. But if she didn’t do it, the porter got away with everything. If she didn’t do it, the porter stayed in control. In control of her – and that thought…

She would leave this place whenever she needed to; no attachments. No memories, either, from what she’d heard – unless she could hack that out… but she wasn’t going to do it at some two bit machine’s whim. Not if she could avoid it. And maybe she could get it to port her Hermione bobble head in two while she was at it. She missed that thing.

A ping from the laptop drew her attention; time to get back to work.

FINAL NOTES:
Charlie will be arriving with a broken arm.

It may be worth noting that Charlie is not aware of any creatures, beyond the Leviathan; the boys implied the existence of more – and she asked if there were other monsters – but she decided she didn’t want to know before they could tell her.

☞ Character Information;
Character Name: Charlie Bradburry
Canon: Supernatural
OU or AU?: original canon universe
Canon point: The end of her episode – The Girl With the Dungeons and Dragons tattoo – after she gets on the bus.

Setting: The world of Supernatural is – in short – our own; except for the small fact that the supernatural stories are real. The myths, the stories – even the old gods – all have some basis in reality.

Most of this, however, does not relate to Charlie in the slightest. Unlike the Winchesters, who fought the monsters on a daily basis, Charlie was a computer programmer and IT expert; like most who lived her life like most of the population – in ignorance.

This only changed for her when the Leviathan were released from their prison in purgatory; these monsters were prepared to turn human into cattle; to make them docile by agents in the food, and engineer them into becoming the perfect herd.

Shape shifters, they had taken the form of various people with influence - including one Dick Roman, Charlie’s boss, who had engineered a plan to drug the various foods in order to ensure docility among humans; not to mention the weeding off of those with unwanted traits.

It was when Charlie hacked into a disk drive, and discovered information about these Leviathan – most explicitly her boss – that she entered the world of the supernatural for the first time. (That said, she only discovered the Leviathan – she remains ignorant of all the rest.)

History: As Charlie appeared in only one episode, her history is rather short - http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Charlie_Bradbury - though I am willing to build upon it if needed.

Personality: Charlie appears to be, at first glance, something of a stereotypical geek. She surrounds herself in paraphernalia from her fandom, dances energetically to music when she doesn’t think anyone’s watching, and uses words like “frak” on a regular basis. In fact, she came very close to backing out from fear – and if not for a pep talk from Sam, might just have ran.

That brings us to one of the darker sides of Charlie’s personality; the girl who needs control of her environment; who’s confidence in part hinges upon this. Abilities: Charlie is a hacker; a brilliant one, at that – she claims she’s never found anything she can’t hack into (and judging by what we see of her, it’s probably true.) She will try to use hacking to get information if she thinks it’ll be useful; and she isn’t beyond stealing for a good cause – particularly from big corporations. Also likely if she thinks she can get away with it.

How did your character arrive in Rapture? A teleportation plasmid went awry, and she ended up appearing in a random clothing shop.

Network sample:

[The video flails a moment; vibrates, bounces, and most certainly jumps. Charlie, everyone; dancing. Not to mention singing along with the music. When she realizes it, she of course freezes solid.] …Hi. People. Don’t judge me.

[Right. Not the best of beginnings. Quick, Charlie, think of something to talk about…] Coffee. I kind of need it. You’ve got shops for that, right? I mean, of course you do; it’s a city. There’s got to be coffee. There’s always coffee. Why wouldn’t there be coffee…

[Stop talking Charlie.] …I’m Charlie. By the way. You know. If anyone’s wondering. [Oooh, this is embarrassing.]

There is also this, although it’s not quite large enough - http://rapturecrack.dreamwidth.org/465.html?thread=19921#cmt19921

Log sample: An example prose post of at least 300 words.

The coffee swirled down her throat, sweet and hot and oh so good; her eyes closed in response; heavenly bliss; until it went down the wrong pipe. She choked, nearly dropping the cup in one violent spasm before managing to calm down; glaring at the cup… she took another sip. More carefully of course.

“Frak, that’s good…”

Another, draining half the cup before she could force herself to stop and put it down, firmly away from the computer. Cracking her fingers for show, she studied the screen through blurry eyes, ignoring their desire to close as she scanned the jumble of letters and numbers for progress at cracking the password and hacking into this odd drive.

She needed to know what this man was up to; and maybe skim a little money off the top of their funds while she was at it. But primarily she needed to stay awake, while her programs worked at making this a reality.

She took another sip; enjoying the potent drink as the numbers flew by. A grin flew across her face when she saw something click; a window opening. She automatically looked for her Hermione doll – and noticing its absence sent a flicker of disappointment through her. But no. Cracking her fingers, she set them to flashing across the keyboard, working deeper into the system. Windows flashed across the screen as she went to work. Almost done.

She took another sip of coffee, though the urge to sleep had fled. Saw a security measure and broke through it, a little smirk on her lips; nothing was going to get in her way here; she was in control. “Boo yah.”

She grinned, leaning back with her coffee for a final sip. She drained it in a few gulps, letting the warmth of it settle in her stomach along with the heady feeling of triumph. Now she just had to call her friends.
